Plant-Based Universities (PBU) is a Europe-wide movement that calls for 100% plant-based catering at universities. Transitioning towards plant-based catering is a necessary step all universities must make to take responsibility in the pressing climate crisis. This should be achieved by gathering the support of the students and staff of the university by starting the conversation about sustainable food at UM.
The Challenge
The climate crisis is getting more and more severe. Recent reports forecast an average temperature increase of 2.8°C by 2100 relative to pre-industrial levels. This far away from the 1.5°C goal agreed upon at the Paris Climate Conference of 2015. Already, we are feeling the effects of global warming such as more frequent intense heatwaves and natural disasters. If we don't take action now, these problems will increase exponentially in the future.
The solution
Animal agriculture is a huge contributor to global greenhouse gas emissions, and the driving factor behind biodiversity loss and deforestation. Because it is directly related to environmental degradation and global warming, reducing the consumption of animal products is a crucial step to slow climate change. Universities do so much research to figure out how climate change can be slowed, but fail to act on their own findings. We ask UM to take responsibility, act on their own research, and take action to fight climate change by no longer offering food that harms the environment.
