What is the Brightlands Startup Challenge?
The Brightlands Startup Challenge is a competition and learning journey for students in the Limburg region to develop innovative ideas into viable ventures. It connects student teams with an international partner network and experts from academia and industry, and helps you build core skills such as entrepreneurial mindset, innovative thinking, and teamwork in interdisciplinary settings.
The challenge exists to empower student innovation in Limburg and to stimulate solutions for societal and entrepreneurial issues. By bringing students, partners, and experts together, it helps turn promising concepts into stronger business plans or prototypes and contributes to a vibrant entrepreneurial ecosystem in the region.

All students of Maastricht University, Zuyd University of Applied Sciences, Fontys and HAS can apply (Bachelor’s, Master’s, PhD and PDEng). Recent graduates can also apply if they graduated after January 2025.

Yes. Participation is free of charge.

Contest Structure & Timeline

How is the contest structured?

The Brightlands Startup Challenge is organized into several key phases designed to take your idea from concept to reality. The trajectory typically includes:

  • Kick‑Off Event: The official start of the challenge where participants can meet industry partners, discover the theme, and form or strengthen their teams.
  • Workshops: Specialized sessions led by professionals covering essential topics such as business development, social impact, and pitching.
  • Speed‑Date Event: Interactive sessions where teams meet with mentors and partners for direct feedback, coaching, and expert advice.
  • Grand Finale: The concluding event of the challenge featuring final pitches and the official announcement of the award winners.

How to apply & eligibility

How do I apply?

You apply through the Brightlands Startup Challenge website when registration is open. If registration is closed, the Register page will indicate this. Keep an eye on the website for the next opening and instructions.

No. An individual cannot apply with more than one team.

No. One team can submit only one project (one team, one project).

Yes, as long as the project fits one of the categories. The challenge is designed for projects at different stages (from ideation to more advanced prototypes/MVPs).

You fill out which category suits best. The final placement of projects in categories is decided by the Brightlands Startup Challenge organisation.

The challenge accepts a wide variety of projects, ranging from initial ideas and early prototypes to more advanced research or startup concepts. Depending on the current maturity of your work, you can enter in either the Ideation or Advanced category. This structure allows projects at different stages to be evaluated fairly.

No, the Brightlands Startup Challenge is open to students from all academic disciplines, including the social sciences, humanities, law, science, and economics. We actively encourage interdisciplinary teams, as combining different perspectives and fields of expertise often leads to the most innovative and impactful solutions.

  1. Login to the dashboard.
  2. Go to “Profile”.
  3. Fill in all the required boxes (name, surname, phone number, nationality, stage of education, faculty, what are you really good at, what are your passions/interests, etc.).

  3. Click on “Add team member”, and then on “Activate sharecode”. 
  4. You’ll see a unique share code pop up. This code you can use to invite team members. You can send them an email with the code if you fill in the email address

  3. Fill in the required fields under “Public Project Information”.
  4. Add a logo + banner that represents your team in “Media”
  5. Save your profile. 
  6. Check if it looks good in “Preview”.

Categories & Award

What are the competition categories?

There are two main categories:

  • Ideation: for business ideas or early concepts (e.g., business model canvas, early prototype direction).
  • Advanced: for projects beyond ideation with a prototype/scale model and/or MVP and customer validation.

Ideation: submit at least one deliverable such as a sketch, 3D model, calculation, value proposition canvas, or imagery plus an idea description.
Advanced: submit at least one deliverable such as a prototype, scale model, MVP, and/or evidence of customer validation.

Core prizes include:

  • Ideation Award: €2,500
  • Advanced Award: €3,500
  • Social Impact Prize: €1,000
In addition, there are Partner Awards (details are announced by the organisers) and, depending on the edition, other special awards (e.g., Audience Award and partner- or campus-specific awards).

Workshops, Mentorship & Support

What support is provided during the contest?
You can join expert-led workshops and get feedback and guidance throughout the programme via partners, mentors, and coaching/pitch moments. The challenge is designed to help you refine your concept, business model, and pitching skills while connecting you to the Brightlands partner network.
Workshops vary per edition and may cover ideation, marketing, budgeting and financial forecasting, founder skills as a student entrepreneur, and building a roadmap from idea to market entry. Check the Timeline page for the current edition’s workshop list and locations.

Yes. The challenge introduces you to an ecosystem of partners and organisations in the region, which can lead to future internships, jobs, collaborations, or next steps for your venture.

The Challenge collaborates with a diverse network of businesses, civic organizations, and academic institutions. These partners act as sponsors and mentors, providing the resources and opportunities necessary for meaningful collaboration. Where can I see who is participating?

You can browse participating teams on the Participants/Candidates page. You can filter by category and search for teams.

Yes. The Participants/Candidates section includes a ‘Teams looking for members’ option, so you can discover teams that are open to new teammates.

Who do I contact with questions?

You can contact the Brightlands Startup Challenge team via email at info@brightlandsstartupchallenge.com. The website also lists a phone number on the contact section of key pages; use the number shown on the website for the most relevant edition/registration period.

This way we can easily reach you. We stand for personal contact and believe that sometimes calling is better than sending an email. Furthermore, this means that we are always reachable via WhatsApp. As with other personal data, we won’t share this with other parties. What do students gain?

You build entrepreneurial skills, develop your project with professional input, sharpen your pitch, and expand your network within the Brightlands ecosystem. You also have a chance to win prizes and partner-provided opportunities to support further development (e.g., resources, access to events, or workspaces). Moreover, winners of the competition have the opportunity to be participating in the national competition, the Dutch University Challenge!
