The Mission

Our mission is to help households stop buying more food than they need. Dutch households still throw away around 25 kg of food per person each year, worth about €100, and the national goal is to bring this down to 18 kg by 2030. Most of this waste starts in the supermarket: people buy without knowing what they already have or how much they will actually use. Happy Fridge wants to make the right amount the easy choice. We start with students and small households in Maastricht, who struggle most with large pack sizes and irregular schedules. Our goal is to measurably reduce household food waste, save people money and lower the carbon footprint of food, while making daily grocery shopping simpler.

The Challenge

Most household food waste happens because people buy more than they need. Research among Dutch consumers found that in-store buying behavior is the main driver of food waste. People forget what is already in their fridge, buy duplicates, and choose pack sizes that don’t match how much they actually eat. Existing apps try to solve this with fridge inventories and recipe suggestions, but they all depend on users logging every item by hand. Within a few weeks people stop updating the app, the inventory becomes wrong, and the app becomes useless. The real unmet need is not another list or recipe app. It is a way to know what you have and how fast you use it without any extra effort.

The solution

Happy Fridge is a mobile app with an AI agent that builds and maintains your fridge inventory automatically: Automatic input: users scan their supermarket receipt or online order (for example from Albert Heijn or Picnic). The AI reads it and adds the products to their virtual fridge. Usage estimation: instead of asking users to log what they eat, the AI learns how quickly each household uses products, from their buying rhythm and the recipes they cook in the app, and predicts what is left. Quick check-ins: once or twice a week, the agent asks a short question, such as “Is the bread finished?” or “Did anything go in the bin?”, to correct its estimates. This also lets us measure real waste reduction. Smart shopping list: before the next shop, Happy Fridge suggests exactly what to buy and in what quantity or pack size, based on planned meals and what is still at home. It also suggests recipes for items that will expire soon.
