The Mission
ViewMate aims to make cross-border student relocation transparent, affordable, and safe. Finding student accommodation in a foreign university city is often fraught with high travel costs, intense competition, and predatory rental scams. ViewMate turns this stressful ordeal into a community-driven experience. By mobilizing current university students as on-the-ground advocates, ViewMate provides incoming students with honest, unfiltered eyes and ears inside prospective apartments. Beyond inspecting properties and verifying leases, ViewMate bridges the gap between strangers—giving incoming students their very first trusted friend and local advisor in their new home before they even pack their bags.
The Challenge
Relocating to an unfamiliar university city (such as Maastricht) leaves international and non-local students caught in an impossible dilemma: Exhausting & Expensive Travel: Students often travel hundreds of kilometers multiple times (e.g., repeatedly driving or taking trains 400+ km each way) just for a 15-minute viewing, spending excessive money on transit and accommodation. Rampant Rental Scams: Because demand far outstrips supply, fraudsters exploit remote applicants by taking security deposits for fake listings, non-existent properties, or sublets they do not own. Misleading Listings & Hidden Flaws: Wide-angle lenses, outdated photos, and staged lighting frequently conceal serious problems like black mold, broken plumbing, structural noise, or unlivable room sizes. The "Blind Lease" Dilemma: Without local contacts, students are forced to either sign binding contracts blindly out of desperation or risk arriving on campus without a place to sleep.
The solution
ViewMate is a two-sided, peer-to-peer mobile marketplace that pairs incoming remote students with verified local students available to inspect rooms on-demand. On-Demand Local Viewers: Incoming students post their viewing time and address; local students accept the gig based on their schedule and proximity. Live Video or Structured Walkthroughs: The local viewer visits the property, hosts a live video call (or records a comprehensive walkthrough), checks water pressure, tests window seals, and asks the landlord critical questions. Standardized Inspection Scorecard: Each viewing includes an objective checklist covering dampness/mold, natural light, noise levels, common area cleanliness, and house dynamics. Local Insight & First Friend: Viewers provide candid feedback about neighborhood safety, bike routes, grocery access, and student life, serving as an authentic welcome contact. Escrow-Protected Transactions: The applicant's payment is held securely and only released to the local viewer once the viewing report and media are delivered.
