The Mission

InsetSolutions explores how universities can reduce waste and make better use of existing resources through reuse and repurposing. The initial focus is on study materials that are no longer needed once a course ends, which may otherwise be discarded despite still having practical value. The initiative aims to identify opportunities to give these materials a second life, helping create a more resource-efficient and environmentally conscious university environment. By exploring practical reuse systems and potential collaborations within the university community, InsetSolutions seeks to turn waste into a useful resource.

The Challenge

Universities generate waste throughout the academic year, including study materials that become unnecessary once a course has finished. Notes, printed course packs, and other educational resources may still have value, yet there may be no straightforward system for collecting, sharing, or repurposing them. This creates two challenges: potentially reusable materials are wasted, while students and university departments may continue to spend money and resources on new materials that could otherwise be recovered or shared. The underlying problem is a lack of effective, convenient ways to keep useful resources in circulation within the university community. InsetSolutions seeks to explore how these materials can be redirected towards new users or purposes instead of being thrown away.

The solution

InsetSolutions proposes exploring practical ways to collect, reuse, and repurpose study materials and other university waste. One potential approach is to develop a system through which students can donate unwanted study materials at the end of a course, allowing other students to reuse them in future semesters. Materials that cannot be reused in their original form could potentially be redirected towards alternative uses or appropriate recycling streams. Possible project components include: - Study Material Exchange: A collection or sharing system for reusable course materials, books, notes, and other educational resources. - Campus Collection Points: Convenient locations where students can leave materials they no longer need. - Creative Repurposing: Exploring alternative uses for materials that cannot be reused for their original purpose. - University Partnerships: Collaborating with students, university departments, and campus sustainability teams to identify waste streams and implement practical solutions. The ultimate goal is to help universities move towards a more circular system in which valuable resources remain in use for longer.
