The Mission
Our mission is to broaden the communication tools available to people with intellectual disabilities, their families and the professionals who support them. We have explored and develop melodies as a meaningful communication pathway for situations where words alone are not enough. AutiMelody is built on the belief that communication should adapt to the individual, rather than expecting the individual to adapt to a single form of communication. By using familiar, activity-linked melodies, we seek to create predictable and meaningful cues that can support understanding, participation and interaction in everyday life. Our goal is not to replace speech, existing augmented and alternative systems or other communication approaches. Instead, we aim to complement them by offering an additional layer of communication that can be personalised to the individual. At the same time, we are committed to building an evidence-informed solution. Rather than making claims before they are justified, we want to rigorously investigate for whom AutiMelody works, in which situations it creates value and how it can be integrated into real-world care and family environments. Ultimately, our vision is a world in which communication is more inclusive, more adaptive and more responsive to individual needs, allowing more people to participate, connect in their daily lives.
The Challenge
There are days where words just aren't enough. AutiMelody addresses a fundamental communication gap experienced by people with intellectual disabilities who face significant barriers to verbal communication. In many care and home environments, communication still relies heavily on spoken language, despite the fact that not everyone is able to understand, process or express themselves effectively through words alone. When communication breaks down, it can lead to frustration, misunderstandings, reduced participation in daily activities and a loss of autonomy for the person receiving support. Existing communication approaches can be valuable, but there remains an unmet need for communication tools that move away from what we currently have. AutiMelody was born from a simple observation: music sometimes reached my sister in ways that words did not. That experience raised a broader question: if communication is not working, are we adapting enough to the way people actually understand the world? The problem we are addressing is therefore not simply that some people cannot communicate through speech. It is that communication systems do not always adapt sufficiently to the unique ways people understand, respond and connect with others.
The solution
AutiMelody is a personalised, music-based communication support tool that uses activity-linked melodies to support communication for people with intellectual disabilities who experience significant communication barriers. The concept is simple. A caregiver, family member or support professional associates a specific melody with a particular activity or situation, such as going for a walk, taking medication, using the toilet or saying goodbye. When the activity occurs, the corresponding melody is played. Over time, the melody can become a familiar and predictable cue that helps the individual understand what is happening and what comes next. AutiMelody does not require the person with intellectual disabilities to navigate complex technology themselves. Instead, it supports the people around them in creating a shared and personalised communication environment. Through repeated use, observation and adaptation, caregivers can identify which melodies and situations are most meaningful for each individual. By transforming music from a passive experience into an intentional communication tool, AutiMelody offers a practical, scalable and human-centred approach to supporting communication. Our long-term goal is to build both the evidence base and the products necessary to make this approach accessible to families and care organisations across the Netherlands and beyond.
