The Mission
CoolNest aims to create sustainable, smart climate shelters that protect people from extreme heat through sustainable architecture, intelligent environmental monitoring, and accessible public amenities such as shade, drinking water, and resting areas. Starting with a pilot in Maastricht, we seek to improve public health and urban well-being, support sustainable mobility, and help communities adapt to climate change. Our long-term vision is to develop a scalable model that can be replicated across European cities, making urban spaces cooler, safer, greener, and more inclusive.
The Challenge
Rising global temperatures and frequent heatwaves are making European cities increasingly unlivable during summer months. Urban heat islands put vulnerable populations at risk, yet most municipalities lack scalable, immediate infrastructure to offer relief, public drinking water, and shaded space in dense urban areas.
The solution
We design and deploy smart, sustainable climate shelters equipped with natural shade, integrated drinking water fountains, comfortable seating, and IoT sensors. By real-time monitoring temperature, air quality, and usage data, our shelters provide immediate cooling relief to citizens while helping municipalities optimize urban climate adaptation strategies.
