The Mission
In an ever-increasing digital world, many elderly people face challenges encompassing smartphone use, software navigation and online safety. Many seniors feel that they are "too old" to learn how to use the technologies of our day. Unfortunately, this only increases the already large digital polarization. Our mission is to empower elderly people through personalized, hands-on training that meets them where they are. We aim to patiently address their unique needs and learning paces. By focusing on practical skills such as scam detection, basic digital communication and simple photo/ video editing, the elderly can become much more independently confident technology users. Ultimately, we aim to foster digital literacy, reduce isolation, and promote intergenerational connection, helping older adults embrace technology as a means of improving their lives, staying informed, and remaining connected with family, friends, and the broader community.
The Challenge
The project addresses the communication and digital literacy gap between older and younger generations. Despite having access to smartphones, computers and the internet, many seniors lack the knowledge and confidence to use them for everyday tasks. This lack of digital competence leaves them vulnerable to scams, isolation from family and friends, and reduced participation in an increasingly technological world. Therefore, the problem is not about access to technology, but about the skills and understanding needed to use it effectively.
The solution
Our proposed solution is to provide personalized technology training for elderly people, helping them develop skills to confidently navigate the modern digital world. This training would cover essential areas such as smartphone usage, email management, photo & video editing, scam detection and software skills. We aim to target senior community centers, churches and nursing homes, offering multi-level workshops led by young people in Maastricht. Thereby fostering intergenerational relationships. These workshops will guide seniors through tech topics. We believe that gamifying the learning process with fun, interactive educational games will reduce stigmas and increase technological familiarity. Additionally, we will provide printed step-by-step guides and simple instructional materials to support their learning.
