The Mission

Coffee Cups’ mission is to collect used coffee grounds and transform them into ceramics and therefore prevent the coffee grounds from going to landfill.

The Challenge

The challenge is that many people dispose of their used coffee grounds which then eventually find their way into landfill sites. Once in landfill the coffee grounds break down and release methane which has a greenhouse gas effect considerably higher than carbon dioxide.

The solution

Coffee Cups’ solution to the challenge is to collect used coffee grounds from cafes and restaurants in and around Maastricht to prevent the coffee grounds from going to waste. The used coffee grounds will then be transformed into ceramics. Repurposing the coffee grounds will lead to a reduction of waste going to landfills in addition to a reduction in the emissions of methane.
